ECA Press Release 136/2012

Addis Ababa, 27 August 2012 (ECA) – A three-day consultative workshop on Improving Statistics for Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development opened today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia .

In his opening remarks, Mr. Abdalla Hamdok, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) recalled that a Global Strategy for Improving Agricultural Statistics was designed and endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission, in New York, in March 2010. This strategy, he noted, should go a long way in addressing challenges of collecting, managing, disseminating and using agricultural statistics in the continent in the 21st century.

He further noted “this workshop was organized to expose participants to the Action Plan and how it will be implemented in their countries, beginning with undertaking capacity and needs assessment, which will provide a rational basis for developing action plans at country level as well as technical and financial assistance programmes at continental level”.

Mr. Hamdok also highlighted the key expected outcomes of the workshop, including getting empowered to participate effectively in the capacity and needs assessment and designing an implementation action plan for each country.

The workshop is jointly organized by the ECA, the African Development Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and hosted by the Central Statistical Agency of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development of Ethiopia.
