UN System to launch Coordination Mechanism for Central and West Africa

Dakar (Senegal), 16 September 2011 (ECA) - The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, West and Central Africa Sub-regional Offices, along with the UN agencies operating in Central and Western Africa are jointly convening a “High-Level Meeting on the Establishment of a Sub-Regional Coordination Mechanism (SRCM) for the United Nations System-wide Support to the African Union and its New Partnership for Africa’s Development Programme in West Africa”. The meeting will be held in Dakar, Senegal, from 5-6 October 2011.

The SRCM is an initiative of the United Nations launched in 1999 to improve the activities of the various UN agencies and organizations at the regional level. The initiative aims to enhance coordination in the manner and approach in which UN agencies and organizations provide their support to the continent.

According to the Director of the ECA West Africa Subregional Office, Ms. Fatoumata Sy Ba, the meeting will discuss modalities that aim to enable the UN Agencies in Central and West Africa to “Act as One” in giving assistance to the ECOWAS, ECCAS and other regional economic communities. “These organizations are responsible for implementing the NEPAD framework, the MDGs and other sub regional development,” she says.

Delegates at this meeting will debate, ways to promote efficiencies and synergy in the way the UN leverages its development assistance and reduce fragmentation in programme planning and delivery. They will also strengthen linkages between intergovernmental organizations and other stakeholders in Central and West Africa, and maximize linkages between UN programmes at country, sub-regional and regional levels.

“We expect the meeting to agree on a framework in which the UN Agencies will work on together, allocate responsibilities and timelines for actions agreed to,” says Ms. Ba.

The participants at the meeting will be high-level representatives of ECOWAS, CEMAC, ECCAS, UEMOA, MRU and other IGOs. The delegates will also comprise of Heads of UN Agencies in Central and West Africa, and other international partners operating in the sub-region, including the African Development Bank. The African Union Commission and the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency will also be represented.
