ECA Press Release No. 108/2012
Addis Ababa, 27 June 2012 (ECA) - UN Agencies will present a comprehensive UN-wide package of capacity strengthening activities in support of the African Union in a ceremony billed for tomorrow, Thursday at the AU headquarters.
According to the Information and Communication Service (ICS) of ECA, the report package covers the key target beneficiaries, including the various Departments of the AUC; capacity requirements of each of the Departments as well as a consolidated programme of capacity building for the Commission.
It also includes a narrative of the proposed work programme of all the 9 UN clusters in the framework of the Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM)) in support of the AU and associated frameworks for monitoring and evaluating the implementation of capacity building interventions.
The report presentation will be followed by a press briefing on the UN support the African Union that will be jointly addressed by Mr. Abdoulie Janneh, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of ECA and by Mr. Erastus Mwencha, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
The report offers, for the first time, a plan of action on how the United Nations system is effectively supporting the capacity needs of the African Union and its various organs.
Accordingly, the UN system will present a diagnosis of the capacity needs of the AU and the comprehensive work programme jointly prepared by the UN and AU to respond to them, said Professor Emmanuel Nnadozie, Director of ECA' S Economic Development and NEPAD Division (EDND).
The United Nations supports the African Union capacity needs through the Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) in Africa consisting of UN agencies “delivering as one” for the AU and its NEPAD Programme.
“Thursday's event is significant because, working within the framework of the RCM and its 9 Clusters the UN support to the AU and its organs will now be more focused and streamlined", Prof. Nnadozie said today in Addis Ababa.
It would be recalled that in November 2006, a Declaration entitled “Enhancing the UN-AU Cooperation: Framework for the 10 Year Capacity Building Programme for the African Union“was signed by the then Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan and the then Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Prof. Alpha Konare.
The main purpose of the Declaration was the commitment to support the efforts of the Commission of the African Union to enhance its capacity to deliver on its objectives of peace and security, development and integration.
